reports of serious liver toxicity with Ketek

FDA's Medwatch reported 3 serious cases of liver toxicity with Ketek (telithromycin). The patients were not on other medication and said to be in good health. Some alcohol use may have involved in some case(s). This drug has been heavily promoted not only by usual advertising but also I have been to several "CME" events which seemed to emphasize the theoretical advantage of less resistance developing with this drug as have discussions in journal supplements gently leading the reader to the conclusion that the problem of increasing drug resistance might be mitigated by using telithromycin. It makes sense to not be among the first physicians who prescibe a new drug particularly in situations where there are multiple alternatives whose track records are long and the side effects are better known.

hello, my name is karen , i am a 37 year old mother of 3 small children. i have been suffering from symptoms of an illness for 6 years -on and off . some drs thought it may be ms only to be proven wrong by mri several times . ive been told from several lyme literate drs that my symptoms and test results are consistant with lyme disease. i was on amoxicillin for 1 yr when i was pregnant 5 years ago with wonderful results and symptom free. this september after my 3 child-the symptoms came back very strong and consistant i was put on amoxicillin again and it failed ,then the dr put me on ceftin and it also failed. i decided to go to a lyme literate dr that was more knowledgeable about the disease. i was put on ketek-because it is thought to be very effective with lyme disease- iwas on the ketek for almost 6 weeks. i had trouble getting to the dr at 4 weeks for a blood test to test liver enzymes due to childhood sicknesses at home . i had a test at about 6 weeks and my liver enzymes were extrememly elevated-i had to go off ketek immediately. its 5 weeks after my 1st blood test and they are still elevated .i called a liver specialist office yesterday and told them the situation and they said that i needed and emergency visit and they would see me on monday. now this is scary, besides they lyme disease i was a relatively healthy individual who doesnt drink alcohol at all or smoke. before going on ketek i called the company about my concerns about the liver toxicity and they told me that only 1% of the people who take it have this side effect. well i guess im the 1%. the ketek did work well to take away my lyme symptoms but im afraid of the lasting results.i just read about 3 reported cases of liver toxicity in an article and 1 person recovered ,1 person needed a transplant and 1 person died.
